Mission Statement:
I. Opportunities or needs that we exist to address:
A. Opportunities:
1. Channel- There is a channel, which is underused
2. Programming
a. Works that are being completed every semester from the theater,
dance, music and film departments and programs
b. Events on campus that have been filmed, such as lectures, panel
discussions, demonstrations, and concerts.
c. Student organizations who perform events that are outside of
academia, but are part of the Connecticut College community
B. Needs:
1. Lack of Access to events
a. Events are only attended by those with the luxury of time.
Events can often go unnoticed, and under attended
b. Certain academic pursuits are not open to the public, such as
films created within the film department.
c. Events on campus have difficulty in advertising, which
contributes to a lack of knowledge of campus events.
d. Persons who are interested in an event after its official
occurance (if controversy or interest is sparked by said event,
for example), have only eyewitness accounts to represent actual
occurances
2. Students have a need for easy access to information such as weather,
menus, event schedules
3. Those who identify themselves as part of a marginalized group on campus
are too often left out of the different media on campus with which
they might express themselves.
4. Historically, student groups have limited themselves to personally
disempowering hierarchies that mimic a corporate system, with Chairs,
Presidents, or Boards of Directors.
5. Prospective students have little exposure to the campus creative
community during their visits to campus. Connecticut College has a
rich network of creative minds which are not easily showcased.
II. What we are doing to address these needs:
A. Having a television station with programming that has been pre-recorded on
Connecticut College events will take advantage of both the available channel,
and the available programming.
B. Lack of Access:
1. Events filmed on campus will be replayed on the television station, in
order to maximize the amount of people who are exposed to the event.
This solves a lack of attendance, knowledge, and prior interest.
2. Playing works which were never released to the public in the first
place would take advantage of the body of work being created each
semester in, for example, the film production classes.
C. By regularly programming a list of upcoming events, weather, and campus dining
hall menus (like a news channel or radio station might), this information can
be distributed via another medium, increasing the likelihood of information
dispersal
D. By implementing an affirmative action search program, we aim to actively encourage
and seek out the participation and leadership of people of color, women, gays,
lesbians, transgendered people, bisexuals, queers, intersex people, gender
variant people, disabled people, and people belonging to other marginalized
groups. We believe this goal to be inseparable from our overall mission and
strive to create an environment that breaks down oppressive social hierarchies
within our collective and beyond.
E. By operating the television station in a horizontally managed workers'
collective, we hope to engage participants in an empowering way without
relying on a hierarchy.
F. Providing prospective students with a first-rate, immediate connection with
specifically artistic and creative communities, shows just how their future
efforts can have a practical, hands-on application
III. Principles or beliefs that guide our work
A. Do-it-Yourself mentality: Students are capable of running a television station
at least as well as anyone else
B. We believe that there are events on campus worth revisiting
C. Liberal Arts Education
1. The station would exist as an incorporation of the liberal arts in
action concept of education, especially Connecticut College's own
strength in multi-disciplinary collaboration
2. We believe that the liberal arts education put into action would
include endeavors such as this one, especially for those who are
looking to implement these experiences later in their careers.
D. Investing in an affirmative action search program will enrich C4TV, and the campus
community at large.
E. Hierarchy and positions of authority should be minimized. Systems which mimic
failed and disempowering structures that currently exist will be doomed to
their same failure.
